the symptoms look as if some very large file is
being opened and extended while Apache is running,
but reset to small size or even removed when you
stop Apache.

But I am not aware of anything inside mod_gzip
that would cause such a behaviour.

If you had at least the name of the file, it might
give us a clue where to look for it ... but con-
fronted with only these symptoms I'm afraid we
cannot do anything better than some guessing game.
