It doesn't depend on what you are compressing, therefore I
would start with replying "yes". ;-)

completely and thoroughly, and if this doesn't answer all
your questions, then feel free to ask again.

No changes at all, if you are happy with the new behaviour
of mod_gzip. But be sure to understand the reason of these
changes, and prepare to check whether you can improve the
caching of your pages by writing the proper "exclude" rules.

Do you experience problems with proxy servers that are
caching your compressed pages and serve them to browsers
that cannot handle them?
This is what the new versions are mostly about.
