[Mod_gzip] mod_zip and apache version

Hi,

I have a Red Hat system running Squirelmail (apache-1.3.27-2, php-4.1.2-7.3.6)
and the system is geting very slow. Squirelmail website recommends mod_gzip
to increase efficiency. So here I am.

I've tried to find documentation on mod_gzip: compatibility with my version of
apache, installation procedures, hints for https usage... The links found at
the mod_gzip homepage go to an expired domain name, bought by an annoying
company :/

Anyway. Here are my questions.

1.- Which version of mod_gzip should I use for my system? Are mod_gzip
versions related in anyway with apache versions?

2.- Where can I find a fine manual so I can RTFM?

3.- Does anyone has mod_gzip used in production servers? (mail, http or
similar). I would like to use with our main webmail (https-squirrelmail)
server. I'd like to know what "gotchas" have you found on production
environments.

4.- Any extra advice from mod_gzip users?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,
Josep
