did you trace the HTTP content that was actually served to

Which exact Netscape 6 version are you referring to?
Netscape 6.0 and 6.1 are so horrible broken that I would
consider them to be totally useless (and they don't support
gzip encoded content anyway).
Netscape 6.2 (= Mozilla 0.9.4) is the first Mozilla version
of the Netscape Browser that makes any sense to use, and I
am not aware of any problems this browser has with compres-
sed pages.
