[Mod_gzip] Latency of mod_gzip?

Hi,

I've installed mod_gzip, but I'm noticing a latency of about 16ms for a 
file of 22K. Used to be 1 or 2ms without compression. Measurements 
taken on a LAN. I've also noticed that the delay seems to be linked to the 
size of the file, the bigger the file the bigger the delay.

What can I do so that the latency is smaller?
